With the ERLite you can also swap out the internal storage with a larger USB drive (one with a tiny form factor, thumb drive style) You can point it at Debian apt repositories and install whatever you may need on top of the included packages. The Edge Router is a fully functional MIPS Debian environment with a customized Vyatta platform on top. These aren’t difficult to set up if you’re reasonably knowledgeable about networking (entry-level/hobbyist with some experience will do) and can do some stuff that’s more advanced than most consumer SoHo devices- hardware offload VLAN, enterprise style WPA2 (via a radius server) load-balancing/bonding/fail-over for the WAN link(s), VPN from the router itself to a self-hosted or third-party VPN provider (it’s more convenient than configuring every device on site to use a VPN) and plenty of other stuff. The Octeon chips are used in some mid-range enterprise layer-7 firewalls (Palo Alto Networks may be one that I’m thinking of) The EdgeRouters are not only tremendous in terms of value but they use terrific hardware with good network offload capabilities- an Octeon-based chipset. If the In-Wall isn’t what you’re looking for for form-factor or mounting, the Ubiquiti Nano HD is also very nice but should be “properly” mounted (more traditionally), much differently than the In-Wall You can do VLAN tagging per-SSID, up to 6 SSIDs depending on which model you get Ubiquity In-Wall HD is nice for WiFi, especially if you can make use of the switch ports and VLAN tagging on it (good for a smart TV or gaming console, to cut down in wireless traffic) It makes up for that with hardware switching support. Someone mentioned the EdgeRouter X, which is also great, but not as powerful in terms of hardware. I do plan on doing this no matter what router I pick I already have a wifi six capable motherboard because it was a better mobo than the wifi five capable ones. I was with Sky Fibre Broadband max and I am now switching to Virgin Media 516mbps. I need to get a new router because I will be switching ISP and up until recently I was stuck with their Router/modem combo unit they make it almost impossible to have your own router. u/RoweDent created this awesome resource on network theory u/tht1kidd_ has created a suggestion post regarding information everyone needs to provide when asking a question about their network There have been some excellent guides written in this sub, and we're always looking for more!
